breveCreatures is a screensaver that simulates the evolution of virtual creatures in a physically simulated 3D world. Beginning initially with random creatures, the screensaver uses a genetic algorithm to develop creatures capable of realistic locomotion behaviors.
The concept and algorithms implemented in breveCreatures are based on Karl Sims' seminal work, "Evolving Virtual Creatures".
Because the screensaver uses an evolutionary algorithm, it may take a long time - hours, or even days - before effective locomotion behaviors can be observed. Each time it is run, the screensaver will save its progress and continue from where it left off.
This is a ScreenSaver Module for Mac OS X.

2 Screensaver in 1! Watch dolphins jump and dive in a 3D ocean environment, OR have them jumping and diving on the screen you were just working on, or any other background image you like!
DeskToy is a screen saver for Mac OS X. It renders an animated scene of a common perpetual motion desk toy: a collection of concentric circular pendula linked together.
There are lots of ways to configure the view: you can change the number of rings, put the camera in the center, speed up or slow down the frame rate. You can also enable damping to watch the pendula gradually become still in the horrible way of all things in the fullness of time. Do so only at the risk of profound existential despair.
An efficient well done screen saver which will play back slideshows of your favorite pics or QuickTime movies. Also has some security features ideal for those just trying to keep the kids from destroying too much while you're not around.
Electric Sheep 2.7b17a
This software owes its name to Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It realizes the collective dream of sleeping computers from all over the internet.
When the screen-saver is activated, the screen goes black and an animated 'sheep' appears. Behind the scenes, the screen-saver contacts a server and joins the parallel computation of new sheep. Every fifteen minutes 24/7 a new sheep is born and distributed to all clients for display. Each sheep is an animated fractal flame.
This program is recommended only if you have a high-bandwidth, always-on connection to the internet such as DSL or cable modem. For best results, let it run overnight to collect a whole flock. Laptop users might have to adjust their power settings to accomplish this.
Euphoria is a psychedelic OpenGL ScreenSaver for Mac OS X. Euphoria is a creation of Terence M. Welsh. It was ported to Mac OS X by Stephane Sudre.
A cool screen saver that displays your favorite sentences, lyrics... fading in and out like caption. Text font, fade speed and freeze time can be customized to fit your needs!
Fireflies is a psychedelic OpenGL ScreenSaver for Mac OS X. Fireflies is a creation of Terence M. Welsh. It was ported to Mac OS X by Stephane Sudre.
Quartz Extreme rendered flowers.
About 2 years ago, I found some OpenGL code on the internet. I spent a weekend playing around with it, and though that it would be cool to have as a screensaver. I released Flurry 1.0 for free, but asked that users send me a postcard from where they live if they liked it alot.
Flurry is now version 1.4, and Apple has even included Flurry as the default screensaver in Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar. Their version is not as customisable as the Flurry you can download from here, but both versions include the Altivec code Apple wrote for me (Flurry was used at the WWDC 2002 by Apple's Architecture and Performance Group as a demo for optimisation techniques).
Flux is a psychedelic OpenGL ScreenSaver for Mac OS X. Flux is a creation of Terence M. Welsh. It was ported to Mac OS X by Stephane Sudre.

Helios is a particle attraction/repulsion screen saver where "blobs" emit and receive multi-colored particles. It's difficult to describe, but as some have said about the screen saver, it's pretty insane.

This is a screensaver which displays an animated version of M.C. Escher's Print Gallery drawing.
This screensaver displays an animated blob of liquid glass that flows and deforms according to various patterns.
This one draws snowflakes falling down your screen. Simple enough, but the oh-so-clever part is that it uses a semi-physical model (that I pulled out of my ass) for growing each snowflake, meaning every snowflake is unique (as well they should be!) and also that it uses a quite a bit of processing power. But that's the price you pay for individuality!
This screensaver renders a fairly realistic water effect over your desktop, showing it distorted through the wavy surface of the water as raindrops fall on the surface.
A simple Screensaver for Mac OS X which displays the current phase of the moon, along with some detailed lunar information.
MacDim is a little, beautiful screensaver for Macintosh. It takes almost no memory. With MacDim screens that have not been used for a while can be dimmed. Monitors that support power saving can also be turned off. To dim up the screen(s), just move the mouse or press a key. MacDim does not do any annoying sounds when undimming from powersaving mode.
Marine Aqurium 2.6.1
You've seen aquarium programs before, but you've never seen anything like this! Marine Life so vibrant you won't believe your eyes. Indescribable realism! Theses fish are actual 3D Models, not flat images dragged accross the screen.
MatrixSaver is a screen saver for Mac OS X that replicates the screen effects of the motion picture The Matrix. MatrixSaver is the only Matrix-style screen saver that is fully compatible with Wallsaver, allowing users to display the screen saver as their desktop wallpaper.

A nice screen saver which simulates traveling through a tunnel.
When the game begins, the score is set to the current time. The left side's score is the current hour (in 24-hour time), and the right side's score is the current minute. Then, the right side scores about once a minute to keep up with the real clock. When it gets to 59, the next score makes it wrap around to 00, and the left side will score shortly afterwards to bring the hour forward. At midnight, left's score wraps around to 00.
Quartz Extreme rendered rain forest.

There's fireworks screen savers, and then there's Skyrocket. Technology has come a long way since the days of the Pyro! screen saver, and Skyrocket shows how far we've come by rendering fireworks in 3D. Oh, and it also has sound effects to go with the fireworks. And unlike some other fireworks screen savers, this one won't change your screen's resolution.
Quartz Composer screensaver of complex snowflakes. Select your own background.

Solar Winds 10.1.1
It's a port of the Windows OpenGL ScreenSaver made by Terence M. Welsh.
Something Fishy: 3D Desktop Aquarium 1.5
So what happens is, the screen fills with water and the fish start swimming around. Sounds simple, but it wasn't simple to make. The effect tho, is well worth the effort. It's far more "3D" than any other aquarium screensaver I've seen because the fish swim in all directions, getting closer or further away and all over the place. Watch it and see!
Soundstream is a Mac OS X screensaver created with Quartz Composer. It consists of a randomly moving particle generator (reminiscent of Flurry) that reacts to the sound level picked up by your computer's microphone.
Soundstream looks great as a replacement to the iTunes visualizer.
For best results, you should adjust either your microphone input level in the Input tab of the Sound preference pane or the Soundstream sensitivity setting.
Demonstrates the immersive 3D star field effect, preserving settings, embedding resources, fly-by animations, etc.
A set of 10 candylicious screensavers taken from Plasq's set of Visualisers in Rax.
3D Desktop Butterflies 1.1
I spent ages trying to make them actually fly like butterflies. Sort of random and fluttery. When I looked at a couple of other butterfly screen savers they all flew in a very basic "flap... flap... flap" fashion which made them look like a wind up aeroplane kinda deal. Still not sure I've got it quite right, but I do think it's cool to watch. And the way they land on both the desktop and the "glass" of your monitor I think looks nice too. I dunno, I just like it!
3D Matrix Code 1.1
The Matrix code in 3D.
Ultimate 3D Aquarium
Ultimate 3D Aquarium Screen Saver offers you realistic 3D virtual fish swimming around a fully 3D environment! They swim around the obstacles as the camera moves through the tank! It truly is like no other aquarium screen saver you have seen before.
Visage allows you to easily and safely customize the appearance of your Mac. The preference pane's simple interface contains five tabs, each of which will help you customize a different part of your Mac. You can run screen savers as your desktop background, customize your login panel, personalize system alerts, and more! Visage keeps track of Apple's default settings for every customization, so you can easily switch back to the original settings at any time.
Wallsaver is a Cocoa application (written in AppleScript) that allows users to run their screen savers as their desktop wallpaper.
After hours of (unsuccessful) Googling for a program that would easily do this, I (Nil Thacker) decided to test my skills and write one myself.
It took a while, but I think I got it.
Key features of Wallsaver:
- 1. Wallsaver doesn't have to be running 24/7. You can launch Wallsaver, activate your screen saver, and then quit the program. Restoring your desktop is just as easy. Open up Wallsaver, click "Restore", and you're set.
- 2. It's simple. The original application was only 30 lines of code.
- 3. It's cool. Now you can show off the full potential of your Mac by letting it power through a task that would bring a PC to its knees.
- 4. It's Universal. Universal Binary, that is.
xBack is a utility that allows you replace your desktop picture with a screen saver. With xBack, you can bring your desktop to life.
