identd for Mac OS X
"It seems that Mac OS X does not come with Ident daemon. Naturally this means virtually nothing unless you want to avoid a ~ character in your IRC nick."
1. Install the Ident Daemon.pkg
This will put the file com.shaunrowland.identd.plist in your /Library/LaunchDaemons/ directory
And will also put the executable identd in your /usr/local/sbin directory
you can load and unload that property list directly with launchctl
$ sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.shaunrowland.identd.plist
$ sudo launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.shaunrowland.identd.plist
if you get whining about permissions when loading and unloading try: $ sudo chown root:wheel /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.shaunrowland.identd.plist
2. You may also need or want to make and put a file named identd.user in your /usr/local/etc/ directory - put only the username you want to show up before the @ when a whois is done on you on irc
3. Enable port forwarding in your router and enable port 113 - if you have your own router connected to one provided by your service provider with your cable modem you will need to enable the router on your cable modem
